PLN & CBM Development

PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has reportedly engaged with ExxonMobil and Sugico MOK Energy in the development of coal-bed-methane (CBM) potentials in South Kalimantan. The state-owned electricity provider expects 200 MW of CBM-based power generation within five years.

During Soeharto years, US, Japan, and European financial institutions dominated financing of electricity projects in Indonesia. They disappeared from the first 10,000 MW project launched by SBY-Kalla administration as Chinese institutions "controlled" the project. How about the second 10,000 MW project?

Bakrie Power (Geothermal)

Panax Geothermal Ltd, ASX-listed company, announced this morning that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with PT Bakrie Power regarding joint exploration and development of geothermal resources and reserves across the archipelago.

State electricity monopolists PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) posted net profit of Rp10.35 trillion last year, flipped from net loss of Rp12.3 trillion in 2008 despite lower sales revenue of 11.6%. State subsidies declined 31.6% to Rp53.72 trillion, but it contributed to 37% of PLN's revenue last year.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, a subsidiary of Pertamina, has signed the heads of agreement with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) for steam supply from Ulubelu geothermal project. Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) finances the project.

State-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) is on fire with ambitious plans and aggressive maneuvers. The most recent is the company's challenge to buy gas at US$9/MMBTU. But that's also an expression of frustration with domestic gas supply.

• The Second 10,000 MW Program Electricity

Government has finally named projects to be included in the second 10,000 MW program. There are 94 power plants to be built under the program, consisted of 43 geothermal, 44 coal-fired, three combined-cycle, and several hydropower. In contrast to the first 10,000 MW, project size in the second program is fairly smaller. Implications?

• Quvat enters power business Electricity

Quvat Capital PartnersLtd, investment fund based in Singapore, has expressed its interest to acquire a small coal-fired power plant in East Kalimantan. A team will be deployed to kick off the due diligence for the asset.
