Rubber Plantation Investments

Rubber and its articles contributed to US$8.41 billion of Indonesian export in Jan-Nov 2010, surged 94% from the same period in 2009. The growth is even higher than palm oil (+40.2%) and coal (36%). Yet, rubber is not a sexy topic in town. Let's revisit the sector and see what's going on there.

Indonesian natural rubber prices surged 8.47% last week. La Nina might push prices even higher. It helps plantation companies to balance the falling output, but will eventually hurt tire manufacturers. Other than China, India is increasingly an important player in the market dynamics.

Tire manufacturers, PT Multistrada Arah Sarana (MASA) Tbk and PT Gajah Tunggal (GJTL) Tbk, are among the best performing stocks this year. MASA gained 44% in the past two months, while GJTL surged 100% in the same period. This is interesting, especially when natural rubber prices keep increasing in recent months.
